Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act and the federal No Surprises Act, healthcare providers are required to provide an estimate of the expected bill for medical items and services to individuals who are uninsured or who are not using insurance (self-pay clients).
Your Right to an Estimate: You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost before you receive services.
When to Expect It: Your healthcare provider must give you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item is provided. You can also ask any healthcare provider you choose for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.
Protection Against Unexpected Costs: If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate from that provider, you have a legal right to dispute the bill through the federal Patient-Provider Dispute Resolution process.
Documentation: Ensure you save a copy or take a picture of your Good Faith Estimate when it is provided to you.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate or the dispute process, you can visit the official federal portal at www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call the toll-free helpline at 1-800-985-3059.
